“This continued commitment by the Government to single-use legislation puts Bermuda at the forefront of the global fight against plastic pollution,” Keep Bermuda Beautiful said.
This follows after Minister of Home Affairs Walter Roban announced that ”the Government has committed to eliminating single-use plastics by 2022.”
A spokesperson said, “Keep Bermuda Beautiful applauds the Government and the Minister of Home Affairs for the release of their well considered policy document on the critical issue of single-use plastic.
“The document highlights not only the need to tackle our own situation, but also to participate in the global movement to regulate single-use plastic products. This continued commitment by the Government to single-use legislation puts Bermuda at the forefront of the global fight against plastic pollution.”
“Keep Bermuda Beautiful Executive Director, Katie Berry said “Today marks a turning point for Bermuda where we can start discussing the changes required of all of us to address the plastic pollution crisis. Plastic is everywhere; in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the oceans where we swim. It has a direct impact on animal and marine life, and also human health.
“Change is not going to be easy! I’ll be the first to acknowledge that plastic has enabled great progress, but it comes at a great price to our environment. We must work together to find alternatives, embrace sustainability, and accept our responsibility to future generations.”
“Keep Bermuda Beautiful recognises that it is not for the Government alone to tackle this challenging issue and offers its ongoing support to achieve our mutual goals to reduce waste and litter.
