Community Health Impacts Research Document
December 2013

Much of the available information on gambling is a product of the gambling industry itself and tends to stress the benefits of casino gambling while playing down the negative impacts. There is growing evidence, however, to suggest that the negative effects of gambling are likely to outweigh the benefits. This recent study by the Toronto Board of Health, for example, concludes that the introduction of a new casino is anticipated to have greater adverse health-related impacts on a community than beneficial impacts, and that these adverse impacts may disproportionately affect lower income individuals and families. Bermuda should seriously consider all sides of the story on gambling before jumping in.
