During June - October 2008, the project on BEST’s front burner is the Draft Bermuda (Development) Plan 2008 , which will guide and allow or limit development in Bermuda for the next five years and possibly a decade or more.
This Development Plan doesn’t consider the consequences of development in a comprehensive way. For example, the rash of hotel development on the horizon threatens to overwhelm Bermuda’s resources and infrastructure: labour supply, housing supply and pricing, transportation, traffic, energy supply, water supply, wastes disposal, and so on. Yet these are not considered when proposals for hotels are put forward. The government needs to consider, consult on, create, publicise and adhere to a sustainable policy for tourism and all aspects of development. Proposals should fit within established Development Plan zonings, coastal protections and protective covenants.
Please note: BEST is NOT trying to stop ALL construction or hotel development or tourism progress. BEST believes that the expansion of the tourism industry should be orderly and measured against a comprehensive plan, which at the moment is non-existent.
