As we launch this site, the project on BEST’s front burner is the Draft Special Development Order (SDO) for the hotel proposed on the Southlands property in Warwick.
This proposal, when considered alongside the rash of hotel development on the horizon, threatens to overwhelm Bermuda’s resources and infrastructure: labour supply, housing supply and pricing, transportation, traffic, energy supply, water supply, wastes disposal, and so on. The government needs to consider, consult on, create, publicise and adhere to a sustainable tourism policy; the Southlands developers need to modify their proposal so that it fits within the established Development Plan zonings, coastal protections and protective covenants. They could then count on broad support. Until then, the proposal and the SDO that would permit it should be opposed.
